Mirage 1.1 by blazedragon555

Mirage is my own version of ClearDock by Unsanity, only it actually works in Leopard. Inside the dmg (nested in a zip file) is an installer (and an uninstaller) that can make your dock, separator, indicator and even Stacks totally clear (the uninstaller can revert everything back to system default). Version 1.1 uses a custom "Clean Up" app, so there should be no more "nonexistent domain/default pair" errors. Oh, and if anyone has any questions or comments, please post them here: http://macthemes2.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=16785139.

Awesome, 200 downloads! That's another 100 downloads in a period of 9 days!

Nice! Another 100 downloads in a week! Guys, feel free to rate this dock, and to comment! :)

Looks great, but creates an issue for me where, when positioned on the left or right, a portion of the screen next to it, from about the forth icon down, is completely unclickable. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I couldn't click things on the web until I made the connection to the dock, and tested the theory by switching the side it was on (sure enough, the same area got locked out on the other side of the screen and the previous side was now clickable).
Apr 14, 2008
I know about this issue, and I've tried to fix it, but then the dock is no longer clear. If you set your dock to automatically hide, the problem goes away. :)
Apr 15, 2008
Version 2.1 improves the Dock Switcher app (it no longer asks you if you want to run the script, and automatically switches your dock to the other type, no interaction needed). The disk image is also less cluttered now (all files except for the installed can be found in Extras).
Apr 16, 2008
Wouldn't it be easier to make this in the same way the rest of the docks are done? Put the files into a zipped folder and have people run them through the dock switcher app? I was getting the same issues citizensweeps, with bad screen area (initially I blamed Amnesty Widgets which I have just installed!) and I don't want to have this dock hidden!!
Apr 16, 2008
No, it wouldn't. The reason it isn't an iContainer, or something like that, is that it customizes many more files than normal docks. I can't, for instance, put my images into PimpMyDock and create a theme out of it, because PMD doesn't have enough placeholders for all the files. And I don't just put the files in there because replacing all the default ones is a hassle. Believe me, this is the best way to go.
Apr 16, 2008
And by the way, everyone has the same problem as citizensweeps. That's just how the dock works, sorry. If you have a large screen, it shouldn't bother you, and you learn to live with it. But if you have a small screen, you're going to have to hide your dock.
Apr 16, 2008
And another 100 downloads in 4 days. Wow, this thing is really taking off!
Apr 22, 2008
Fantastic news, thank you. This is a great dock and I'd hate to have to hide it. Half the reason for wanting a clear dock is so that I don't have to hide it! Great work.

Ach! just downloaded and installed 2.4.1. - Now the unclickable zoen is still unclickable, and shows a shaded gray area!!! can anyone help? Otheriwse this is a great application PB

Most likely, something has gone wrong with the Clean Up script. Hit "repair permissions", and try the installation again. If it still happens, run the Dock Switcher app twice or so, and tell me if it works.
May 2, 2008
Solved it! By moving all the default files out of the Resources folder, then doing a clean install of Mirage. Thanks for the great app! PB

In the 2D dock have this big ugly gradient behind some the icons, extending well above the top of the dock. May not make sense without a screenshot, but any ideas? A file I need to remove? On the 3D dock I still have the reflections and a (more harmonious) gradient. Is that normal?
May 3, 2008
Again, this is a problem with the Clean Up script. After installation, are you getting any errors?
May 3, 2008
Mirage didn't report any, and looking in the Console logs, all I see is progress reports from the Installer. Then 20 seconds of silence (do logs make noise?) before the dock is killed. Could there be other files in there from a another dock mod?
May 3, 2008
Use the Mirage uninstaller to revert the dock back to its default state, and try to reinstall Mirage. Make sure to enter in your password at the Terminal prompt!
May 3, 2008
OK, tried that and it didn't help. But I noticed that the uninstaller was replacing more files than the installer -- ie, I see bottom1.png has been replaced but not the rest of the bottom*.png files. Physically removing them from the Resources folder gets rid of the gradient in 2D mode, which what I was aiming for (I'm another longtime fan of ClearDock). Are the 3D reflections also removable somehow, or would that just duplicate the effect of the 2D dock? (And thank you -- I've been trying to achieve this since the day I installed Leopard. Is there a donations page?)
May 3, 2008
The uninstaller indeed replaces more files than the installer, because it restores all of the files to their original state. What Clean Up does is remove all the files that you would normally do manually, but it does not work for some people. And no, the 3D reflections are not removeable. That's just how the Dock works. Mirage is meant to be a 2D dock, not a 3D one.

Version 2.4.2 explains the problem that some people had been having with the "wall". Read the Read Me or the Mirage FAQ for more info on how to fix this manually.

Erm why has this managed to completely mess up my dashboard? It's the only thing I've installed. Had to run the command to sort out the odd thing in the middle of the dock and then it was fine. Checked something on dashboard. Have the widgets are stuck on the screen now (rebooting doesn't get rid of them) and I can't do anything in the dashboard. I've haven't installed or changed anything else. Thanks Adam
May 8, 2008
Also don't have my finder or trash icon on the doc or in the alt tabbar. I've delted plists, etc and nothing. I look forward to your help on putting things right :)
May 8, 2008
Hmm... this is very odd. Try to uninstall it, and reboot. If that fixes your problem, then I can help you further. If it doesn’t, then it's obviously not Mirage... By the way, when you first launch Dashboard, the widgets take a while to load, and they will seem frozen. Try waiting a bit to see if they "unstick"...
May 8, 2008
Also, there should be no reason whatsoever that the Finder and Trash icons don't appear. What's the alt tabbar? You mean Command-Tab? If the Finder doesn't appear there, then you'd be better off reinstalling Leopard.
May 8, 2008
I've uninstalled and rebooted. Several times. It obviously is Mirage - no other updates have been installed and this has only occurred since I installed Mirage earlier today. The widgets don't "unstick". They aren't working - I'm not completely stupid you know. Sorry yes I meant command tab (like alt and tab in windows). Why should I have to re install leopard when everything was working prior to installing your software?
May 8, 2008
Just to clarify my "stuck" widgets don't do anything and when you try to manage widgets the appropriate cross doesn't appear nor do the "i" icons that let you flip the widgets (whether they have loaded or not)
May 8, 2008
Something is definitely screwy with your installation of Leopard. Nothing that Mirage does could cause this. And if the Finder doesn't show up in Command-Tab, then it's definitely not Mirage. You should really reinstall Leopard. Just tell me, for future reference, what system are you running Leopard on? Is it new/old, and did you upgrade to Leopard, or did it come pre-installed?
May 9, 2008
I'm at a loss to see how this is something to do with my Leopard installation which was done 3 or more months ago. Since that time everything has been working fine - the only change yesterday was to install Mirage so you can understand why I think it is linked. The icons only disappeared after I had run the uninstaller if memory serves.
May 9, 2008
Can you please post a picture, so I can see what you mean by "not in the dock"? Also, if you can grab a picture of Command-Tab, it would be great.
May 21, 2008
Awesome! 1000 downloads!!! If only I could get people to rate this dock...
May 31, 2008
Glad to see that 10.5.3 didn't try to "fix" the dock. Oh, and I just bumped you 1/4 point ... still waiting for that donations link. ;)
Jun 10, 2008
Everybody's got a Donate Button these days. :) You could use something like PayPal or Amazon's Honor System.
Jun 11, 2008
Thanks for the tip, Fuzzy-Wan, I'll upload version 2.4.3 as soon as I can!
Aug 14, 2008
Guys, if you don't like this dock, or it doesn't work for you, can you post your problem before rating the dock badly? I've noticed this a lot, and it's not fair to me, because my dock is being rated poorly and I have no idea what's going on or how you want me to improve it...
Sep 12, 2008
I encountered that black wall behind the dock. But your directions made it easy to fix. Amazing work Thanks a load!
Sep 19, 2008
I apologise if this is an obvious question, but despite the apparent existence of Mirage version 2 and higher, I can't seem to find any links to it anywhere. On this site there is only a link to 1.0.1 which does not fix the unclickable area problem.. hope you can help!
Sep 20, 2008
Sorry for the confusion, rvicars. I reverted the version number from 2.5.2 to 1.0.1, because I felt that Mirage was only a 1.0 product. As for the unclickable area problem, I don't know why it would be causing that... Download the latest version again, uninstall Mirage and reinstall. Go through the FAQ in case it doesn't work and follow the manual steps, and tell me what results you get.

which version of mirage is best for MacBook Pro osx 10.5.5 - ver 2.4.2 or ver 1.0.2 ? Thanks in advance
Nov 17, 2008
Version 1.0.2 (it's the most updated version). I know it sounds a bit weird, but it's because I reset the version numbers back to 1.0 after 2.4.2.

Wow! Over 5000 downloads! Huge thanks to everyone who has downloaded this dock and helped make it what it is!
May 5, 2009
I just signed up to say thanks for this application. I just upgraded to Leopard (didn't see much point in spending $$ when 10.4 was fine and I had ClearDock). Part of the reason it took me so long was because, believe it or not, I knew ClearDock didn't make the upgrade to Leopard and I really, really, really hate too much useless visual crap on my desktop. You know, like, say dock backgrounds and really obvious borders or silly dock backgrounds or... . And now... gone! Back to the beautiful clear background, just like old 10.4. HURRAY!! And thanks again. I wish this was more widely known. Then again, I'm probably just a few short months short of Snow Leopard so I'm waaaay out of the technology loop :-)
May 6, 2009
I just want to announce that Mirage is now the #1 downloaded dock on Dockulicious! A great big thanks to everyone who's downloaded Mirage to date, and everybody who's pointed out bugs and things that don't work. I couldn't have done it without you! :D
Jun 4, 2009
Awsome Dock bro...Just a question: If I wanna go back to the original dock, what should I do?
Jun 6, 2009
pedrodale, just use the included uninstaller (found in the Extras folder on the disk image)... ;)
